Mule deer at Malheur. The Malheur is the birding ‘hot spot’ in Oregon. Some 320 different species of birds have been observed on the refuge. Mammals are abundant too, including mule deer and antelope. There are many good wildlife viewing opportunties available by driving the center patrol road along wetlands, ponds and fields. Spring offers the best birding, but late summer and early fall bring the best weather.
